Recognizing Abilities and Limitations
“Can you . . . ?” asks about the dog’s abilities and limitations, physical, mental and emotional. Long before we ask anything of the dog, we need to know what is possible for the dog.
This question is a complex one with many layers, taking into account the entire dog. The interaction between the dog’s physical being, emotional state and mental capacity is much like a tapestry of interlocking threads. Pull on one, and you can affect so many other threads.
Key Concepts:
- Physical Abilities & Limits: What the dog’s movement and structure can tell us
- Mental Abilities: How does the dog learn? What may be blocking the ability to learn?
- Emotional States: How joy, fear, anxiety, and arousal impact learning
- Using FAT and CARAT:
- FAT to identify structural or functional challenges affecting behavior.
- CARAT to evaluate temperament traits and their influence on behavior.
When we aim at positive, humane training, the Elemental Question, “Can you . . .” plays a key role in helping us understand what is fair and reasonable to ask of the dog, as well as recognizing where a behavior, training or performance issue has its roots.
