Treat/Retreat Certification Requirements

Treat/Retreat Certification Course for Professional Trainers

Course Overview

This intensive certification course was developed for professional trainers who want to master the Treat/Retreat approach to working with socially fearful, shy or awkward dogs. It’s specifically designed to build on your existing knowledge while taking your skills to the next level.

Prerequisites

As a professional, we expect you already have:

  • Professional dog training experience (or are on that path)
  • Solid understanding of learning theory fundamentals
  • Strong working knowledge of canine behavior and body language

Making the Most of Video Learning

This course is video-intensive by design. Think of each video as a puzzle where your observation skills are the key to unlocking deeper understanding. Here’s how to maximize your learning:

  • Watch repeatedly – Plan to view each video multiple times until you can anticipate what happens next
  • Answer all questions thoroughly for each video segment
  • Don’t hesitate to ask when something isn’t clear

A note about video quality: Much of our footage was filmed before everyone carried HD cameras in their pockets. Our priority was creating the best possible experience for the dogs, not perfect cinematic quality. Camera operators stayed at a distance to minimize stress on dogs who found human presence challenging. Some videos have clear audio; others don’t due to background noise (HVAC systems, barking, conversations). This reflects the beautiful messiness of working with real dogs in real environments!

Your videos will help build our Treat/Retreat library, and we encourage your contributions.
