    SHOW ME THE COOKIES!

    Does this sound familiar?

“But he knows this!” but without a chunk of cheese in evidence (or your hand in your treat pouch), your dog just sits there.

Does this mean that reward-based training doesn’t work?

Positive reinforcement R+ is a wonderful way to help dogs learn in a fear-free, force-free way. Food rewards can go a long way towards helping a dog see the value in doing something you’d like them to do.

And yet . . . for many dogs and handlers, what sometimes happens is that a reward (what comes *after* a behavior occurs) becomes a lure or a bribe. It looks a bit like this:

    1. Cue the dog —
    2. No response, dog stares at you blankly as if this is a new word in their vocabulary
    3. Show the cookie (or other reward), and
    4. Voila! Memory instantly restored and the dog responds correctly.

So what’s happening here? Is the dog playing you or trying to get away with something? Is this a ploy that will lead to world domination by your dog?

None of the above. This is simply the dog telling you what they understand about how you use rewards, and pointing out (with a wagging tail) where your reward based training may have hit the most common stumbling block in the training world.

Pro-trainer secret: A few simple changes can make your rewards more rewarding for your dog.

    YOU WILL LEARN

    • What is a reward? Your dog’s mileage may vary!
    • Intrinsic vs extrinsic rewards
    • Creating the right pay-scale based on the dog, the task and the situation
    • Putting dopamine to work for your dog – is a treat in the bush worth 2 in your hand?
    • Mark and bridge – rewards here, there and everywhere

      Don’t be a Pez dispenser!

I recently saw Suzanne at a seminar in Chicago and watching this webinar was a nice reinforcer for me. The key things that were my ‘Yureka’ moments were – knowing that mostly I’m luring and bribing. I have only trained two dogs (who are now seniors but still with me) and I am about to get a new puppy. I realized how much I bribe my dogs and that I never really learned to fade the lure. The other Yureka moment is the bridge. OMG I don’t have to have the food on me and be a PEZ dispenser. I previously learned to click and treat and was taught to be faster, which just made the PEZ dispenser misfire out of control and wasn’t helping my dogs figure out what I was really asking. To this day, my 13 year old senior girl will offer all the behaviors she knows, which now I realize she was telling me just how poor a job I did. So we are cleaning up and learning together how to use rewards BEFORE the puppy gets here so the two senior girls are helping the puppy even though they don’t know it!!!
